Workability And Factor Affecting Workability

Workability
It is the ease with which one can work with the concrete or it may also be defined as with which concrete can be mix ,transported, placed compacted and finished it may also be defined as amount of useful internal work required to be done by concrete to achieve full compaction.

Fector effect workability of concrete

a> Water content
only increase in the water content of concrete has no effect over its workability moreover it reduce the strength of the concrete due to water cement ratio. Hence  if workability of the concrete is to be increased by increase in water content cement content must also be increased in such a way that water cement ratio remains constant.
b> Mix proportion
Higher aggregate cement ratio lead to be formation of lean concrete having less workability as more is the area to be lubricated with the lesser volume cement paste where as, lesser is the aggregate cement ratio reacher is the concrete having high  workability as lesser  is the area of to be lubricated with more volume of the cement paste.
c> Size of Aggregate
Bigger size aggregate leads to the  formation of workable mix as lesser is the area to be lubricated in this case and vice versa.
d> Shape of aggregate
Use of rounded aggregate leads to the formation of highly workable mix as lesser is the area to be lubricated in this case and vice versa .
e> Texture of aggregate
Use of smooth texture aggregate leads to the formations of highly workable mix as lesser is the area to be lubricated in this case and vise versa.
f> Grading of aggregate
Use of well graded aggregate leads to the formation of highly workable mix as more is the availability of free cement paste in this case to carry out  the lubrication.and vice versa .
g> Admixture
Plasticizers, super plasticizer and air entrapping admixtures increases  the workability.
